Hi everyone! I actually didn't know where to go to post this, so I looked for this community, and this seemed like the best place to go with my situation!

So, three of my friends and I are looking to get an apartment. At first I was hesitant, because of my lack of a job, but they wanted me to come along. Because I don't have a job, they instead want me to pay with cleaning services, cooking services, etc. Which frankly, I'm completely fine with. I know it's been done before, because apparently my mother did the same thing back in her college days, too.

But I know times are different now. At first I figured, as long as the rent is being paid, who cares? But now I'm worried that, because I don't have a job, perhaps they wouldn't give us an apartment?

Is there anything in particular I should say/do? I have money in my checking account, so would bringing proof of that help? I'm sorry if I'm being unclear, but this is the first time that I've ever made a decision this big and I'm nervous and unsure about a lot of the terms and such. Thanks in advance for any help, though!

Cleaning products [Mar. 25th, 2009|03:49 pm]

Hi everyone.

I've been having mold and mildew problems in the bathroom, so I bought some tilex mold and mildew remover to solve the problem. The product works really well, but the fumes are just too strong for me to handle in a poorly ventilated place. Is there anything out there that isn't nearly as strong and doesn't give me headaches or cause dizziness?

And also, how do you improve air circulation? It's somewhat bad here being on the 8th floor in an old building even though it has high ceilings. Over the past four years I have developed new allergies such as pollen, generic prescriptions, and high levels of dust because of this. I'm even prone to more bloody noses as well. I'd like some help and basic box fans aren't exactly working justice. Thank you.

You may recall I posted this post about my new apartment in Dallas several months ago.

Well we've moved in and here are just a couple of photos of some things we've done around the howse! It's not much, but we're pretty proud of it regardless.

Clocks came from IKEA, and dinoadventures made the signs! DFW and EWR are the Dallas and Newark airport codes, my hometown and his!

2 more pix!Collapse )

My fiancee dinoadventures and I are moving into a new apartment in July. We've been waiting impatiently for 6 months for it to be finished being built! It's pretty neat to watch the process go along though, and to know I'll be the first butt in my garden bathtub and such. :D

Here are some pix of the progress so far!

welcome home, us!Collapse )

We're paying around $850/month and it's located in Dallas, TX!

Typical 1 bd apartment size ? [May. 30th, 2007|12:05 am]

Hi,

I am thinking of moving into a 1 bd apartment in San Francisco.
Currently I live outside of the city in a 2 bd duplex which is a bit more than a 1000 sq f.

I've always rented a 2 bedroom and I know what sizes are acceptable for a 2 bd apartment and what would be really small, for example below 950 sq. feet.
What about a 1 bd apartment ? Whats an acceptable/spacious size and whats really small ?

Also, any other place to look for a rental besides craigslist ?

When a potential landlord (or rentier for the politically correct among us) asks for a reference, what kind of reference are they looking for? A former roommate? A former/current employer? Anyone with a letterhead?

condo living [Jan. 16th, 2007|01:09 am]

Hi all!

I moved into my condo two and a half years ago, and I am really enjoying it.  For the most part.

The only trouble I am having are with the neighbors behind me.  (The complex is old, and the building is such in that it's not a straight grid design, it's all different layers so it's hard to tell WHICH neighbor is doing the noise, but I'm fairly certain who it is because of some reports from others).

Anyway.  She turns on her TV late at night and keeps it running while she's there.  The Condo I'm in has, I think, thin walls because it's old and not a newer modern one.

The management company has asked her once or twice via letter (once from me, maybe another time by someone else), to turn it down.  She does for awhile, but then turns it back up.

My bed is, unfortunately, against most of the wall, sticking out from, where the wall is.  So I can't put a book-case there or anything like that because my nightstand/small dresser is in the way.  (And that's not blocking the noise, either).

I have insomnia as well which is hard.  I have this stupid dislike of earplugs....so does anyone have any suggestions?  I'd appreciate it :).

Thank you :)

Noisy freakin car.. [Dec. 18th, 2006|12:45 am]

There is a guy that lives in my apartment complex that has a really noisy car.. I'm not sure if he doesn't have a muffler, or if he just has one of those exhaust systems that are supposed to be noisy.

In any case, THIS GUY DRIVES ME NUTS!! He leaves at all hours of the night, and literally revs his engine like 10 times in the parking lot before he leaves.. which causes me (and I'm sure everyone else withing a 5 mile radius) to wake up from their sleep.

This also happens during the day, and it is still very annoying but its just absolutely ridiculous that he doest his between 10 pm and 4am.

My question is.. Is there anyway I can call the police and report this as a noise violation or something like that?

I just moved to Washington and I'm not really sure what the laws on noise are here. Thanks!

Searching through Garbage? [Nov. 27th, 2006|01:24 pm]

In the basement of the building that I live in, there are bins to dispose of your trash and recyclables. There are some people in the building that refuse to separate things, and it's made our super leave really NASTY notes that read something like this:

"WHAT PART OF NO GLASS OR LIQUID IN THE TRASH DON'T YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAND???????????????? If I FIND GLASS, I WILL BEGIN TO OPEN GARBAGE, PUT IT ON YOUR DOORSTEP AND HAVE THE PROPER FINE CHARGED TO YOU."

Nastiness aside, is that legal? Can the super go through someone's trash? And even if he can, the only way that he could be able to identify a person through their trash would be through their mail. Is that even legal? It doesn't seem right, but it seems like it could be straddling the line of acceptability.

Thanks so much!

Finally! Some painting got done. [Nov. 18th, 2006|06:44 pm]

After several weekends of putting it off, we finally got our painting done today! We just did 2 accent walls (the less to repaint when we have to move out), but I think they came out great. I thought I'd share some pics...

Enjoy!Collapse )
